You’re not broken. You’re just in transition.
If you’ve recently sent your last child off to college, helped one get their first apartment, or just looked around your now-quiet home with a heavy heart, you’re not alone.
A lot of women feel stuck in this season of life.
Not because they’ve done anything wrong… but because everything was about someone else for so long.
You gave so much of yourself to parenting. And now?
You’re unsure what’s left — or where to begin again.
Why This “Stuck” Feeling Hits So Hard
Here’s what no one tells you:
The empty nest doesn’t just feel empty — it changes your identity.
You’re still a mom, of course. But the daily, minute-by-minute caretaking? It’s shifted.
That shift leaves a vacuum. And inside that space can come:
- Guilt (for wanting more)
- Confusion (who am I now?)
- Resistance (is it too late to start over?)
How to Start Moving Forward (Gently)
You don’t need all the answers right now — this is just a starting point.
Here’s what I’ve found helps most:
1. Acknowledge what you’ve lost — and what you’ve gained.
It’s okay to grieve the end of an era. You gave your time, your energy, your love.
But you’ve also gained something priceless: the space to rediscover yourself.
2. Ask yourself powerful, present questions.
Try these in a journal:
- What do I enjoy when no one’s watching?
- What part of myself have I ignored while mothering?
- What would I explore if I gave myself permission?
3. Take one action a day toward yourself.
Even if it’s 5 minutes.
- Brew tea and sit in silence
- Write down one thing you’re curious about
- Make a list of things you once loved doing
These small steps begin to shake loose the “stuck” feeling, not by changing your life overnight, but by helping you reconnect with yourself.
Need a little structure to help you start?
I created the Redefining Me: A Self-Discovery Journal for Moms Facing the Empty Nest for this exact moment in life.
It’s a gentle guide to:
- Process what you’re feeling
- Reconnect with your identity
- Begin defining what this next chapter could look like

You’ve spent years helping others grow. Now it’s your turn.
Start slow. Start small. Just start.
You are not stuck — you're simply in between.
